P

Phormium

Origin: New Zealand. Rhizomatous, evergreen perennial which forms very decorative thick and wide tufts of long sword-shaped leaves. When the plant is adult it produces a long, dull red, unattractive inflorescence which is best removed. No special requirements regarding soil, grows well even in dry and sandy soil. Very tolerant of maritime exposure (in New Zealand it is considered to be a “front line” plant because of its ability to withstand salty winds). Most popular in gardens near the sea to form groups, borders and hedges, but they also grow well in pots and troughs on patios, in conservatories or outside shops. Many varieties with different leaves colours are available.
