Tree with thick and upright crown (except for C. avellana “contorta”), oval deciduous leaves, yellow flowers joined in hanging cluster. The fruits are different kind of nuts, according to the variety. It prefers acid soils, some varieties can thrive in pots, and it is used both as an ornamental plant and in flower and fruit compositions made by florists.
